GULAM MOHAMMED SHEIKH
Born in Surendranagar, Saurashtra, Gujarat in 1937, Gulammohammed Sheikh completed a master’s of fine arts in painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Baroda, Vadodara. In 1966, he received the Commonwealth Scholarship from the Royal College of Art, London, and was later conferred an associate of the academy. He has taught art history and painting at the University of Baroda, served as a visiting artist at the Art Institute of Chicago (2002), USA, and a visiting fellow at Delhi University (2004). He has also been a writer/artist in residence of the South Asia Regional Studies department at the University of Pennsylvania in 2000, and completed residencies at the Civitella Ranieri Centre, Umbertide, Italy in 1998, and the Montalvo Arts Center, California, USA, in 2005. In 1962, he was awarded the National Award by the Lalit Kala Akademi, the Padma Shri in 1983 and the Padma Bhushan in 2014, among several other prestigious recognitions.
He has participated in various prominent group and solo shows and exhibitions, more recently at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale in 2014; the India Art Fair (2014 and 2016); the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, South Korea (2013–14); Lalit Kala Akademi Galleries, New Delhi (2011, 2013 and 2014); the Triveni Kala Sangam (2014); Galerie Mirchandani+Steinruecke, Mumbai (2013); Hanart TZ Gallery, Hong Kong (2012); Gallery Art Motif, New Delhi (2012); and Gallery OED, Cochin (2010), among others. His artworks are featured in the collections of the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi; the Peabody Essex Museum, Virginia, USA; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi; the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Fukuoka, Japan; and more, as well as several private collections in India and abroad.
The artist lives between Delhi and Baroda.
