ARTISTS PROFILE

KISHORE CHAKRABORTY

Kishore Chakraborty was born in Kolkata in 1965. He graduated from Rabindra Bharati University there in 1991, after completing both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in sculpture.

The artist, known for his sculpture, has also worked with photography and video art. His body of work is animated by his early experiences of growing up in Kolkata. Initially involved with Marxist groups there, Chakraborty soon became disillusioned with politics. His work reflects this duality in its form, colour and content.

Chakraborty's work has been exhibited in solo shows including ‘We the People...’ at Threshold Gallery, New Delhi, in 2009; at the British Council, New Delhi, in 2004; and at the Nehru Centre, London, in 2001-02, organized by the Berllandery Sculpture Workshop and the South Wales Arts Council.

Amongst the artist's awards are a Senior Fellowship in Sculpture from the Ministry of Culture, India, in 2008; the Charles Wallace India Trust scholarship in 2001-02; an award from the West Bengal State Akademi in 1992; prizes from Rabindra Bharati University in 1983, 84 and 85; and the Birla Academy award in 1990.
