SUSHANTA GUHA

Sushanta Guha, born in 1960 in Gaya, Bihar, is a distinguished printmaker and artist. He completed his formal education in Fine Arts with a Diploma and Post Diploma in Fine Arts from Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, Visva Bharati University in 1982, specializing in Graphic Art and Printmaking. Guha furthered his training with international scholarships, including the Charles Wallace India Trust Fellowship in 1998, which took him to Camberwell College of Arts and Crafts, London, for advanced research in printmaking. In 2003, he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study non-toxic printmaking at the Manhattan Graphic Centre in New York.

Guha has been deeply associated with the Indian printmaking community, actively contributing to the Indian Printmakers Guild, which played a crucial role in advancing the cause of printmaking. His commitment to the medium is evident in his participation in significant exhibitions, both in India and internationally. He has exhibited at prestigious venues such as the Birla Academy of Art and Culture in Kolkata, Chitra Kala Parishad in Bangalore, Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal, and AIFACS in New Delhi. His international presence includes participation in events like the International Biennale Caixa-Ourense in Spain, Bapha Varna in Bulgaria, and the VII Biennale Internationale de la Gravure d’lle-de-France.

Over the years, Guha has been recognized with numerous accolades for his contributions to art and printmaking. These include the National Cultural Scholarship, Junior and Senior Fellowships from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and the prestigious National Academy Award from Lalit Kala Akademi. He has also been honoured with the Bendre Hussain Award from Bombay Art Society, Mumbai, and the AIFACS Award from New Delhi. His work reflects his mastery of various printmaking techniques, and his exhibitions, both solo and group, have solidified his standing as one of India’s most respected contemporary printmakers.

Through his participation in numerous workshops, residencies, and exhibitions across the globe, Guha has not only expanded his artistic practice but has also played a pivotal role in promoting printmaking as a vital and innovative medium in the Indian art scene. His legacy continues to influence younger generations of artists, pushing the boundaries of traditional printmaking.
