ARTISTS PROFILE
Santhana Krishnan
There is something intriguing about doors – the merest tantalising glimpse they provide into the lives that reside within, have continued to fascinate. Traditional Indian homes typically had doors leading to a central courtyard, within which appeared to live a cornucopia of stories. It is these doors that are the central theme of over 900 works created by the accomplished artist, Santhana Krishnan.
Drawing inspiration from doors he observed when he was growing up, Santhana’s doors depict minutiae of the lives that continue their existence behind them. Humdrum items like milk cans, faded wooden boxes, brass and copper vessels, peeling signs of a poster are a testament to the living, breathing nature of these inanimate objects. Santhana paints on canvas as well as wood, and apart
from bright acrylic colours that are his signature style, the incorporation of locks and knockers collected from all over, as well as cloth, in his mixed media works adds to the unique commentary of life portrayed by his works.
His works chronicle the changes that have taken place over the past few decades – some sweeping, some slower but equally relevant - as urbanisation replaces these distinct quirks of small towns with a sameness that no longer distinguishes them from larger places.
Having completed his BFA from Government College of Fine Arts, Kumbakonam and an MFA from Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai, Santhanam is one of the most exciting talents in the art world today. He has more than 12 solo shows and participation in multiple group exhibitions to his credit, and his works have found a home in distinguished collections across the globe.
