New Delhi
A Moment in Modernity: A solo show
of Haren Thakur
16-25 April, 2025

Trained at Kala Bhavan, Visva-Bharati, Thakur draws from the legacy of figures such as Nandalal Bose, Benode Behari Mukherjee, Ramkinkar Baij, and Somnath Hore, while forging a distinctly personal visual vocabulary, Haren Thakur’s artistic practice has evolved into a nuanced modernist language deeply anchored in nature, indigenous knowledge systems, and lived rural experience. Working primarily with Nepalese rice paper, watercolour, acrylic, and mixed media, his compositions synthesize folk traditions, Cubist structures, and Eastern modernist thought.
Human and animal forms, village life, and mythic imagery appear as rhythmic, interwoven presences rather than literal narratives, emphasizing harmony between humanity and the natural world. Thakur’s practice resists the alienation of urban modernity, instead reaffirming cultural memory, ecological balance, and spiritual continuity through a quiet, contemplative aesthetic.
The exhibition was on view from 16 April to 25 April 2025 at Visual Art Gallery, India Habitat Centre (IHC) and subsequently from 6 May to 30 June 2025 at Art Magnum, New Delhi.
